eBay Standard Envelope for Trading Cards: Rates, Sizes & Rules

Sports card in a protective holder beside an envelope, cardboard support and postal scale.

eBay Standard Envelope is a shipping service for eligible low-value trading cards, with limited tracking and shipping protection. This guide covers rates, envelope sizes, packing limits and when to use a tracked package instead.

For low-end cards, the shipping method only makes sense if the fee math works too. Use the eBay card fee calculator to compare eBay Standard Envelope costs against transaction fees and your estimated net payout before card cost and supplies.

We’ve shipped thousands of cards with eBay Standard Envelope (ESE). Below are the requirements to check first, followed by the packing and pricing lessons we use in our own store.

The jump from 1 oz to 3 oz is 58 cents. That’s small enough that you should never risk under-buying a label to save it. Weigh the finished, sealed envelope every time. A digital scale that reads to 0.1 oz costs about $12 and will pay for itself the first time it stops you from guessing wrong.

A familiar packing setup makes estimating easier, but card stock and supplies vary. Keep weighing the sealed envelope instead of assuming every single-card order weighs the same.

eBay Standard Envelope Size, Weight, and Thickness Limits

Four things have to be true or eBay won’t offer you the option.

Category. Trading cards are eligible. Other products must fall within eBay’s approved categories; being flat and light is not enough.

Size. No smaller than 3.5″ × 5″, no larger than 6.125″ × 11.5″. We prefer a #10 business envelope. Avoid rigid mailers; the finished envelope must remain flexible.

Weight. 3 oz maximum, full stop. Not 3.1.

Thickness. Uniform thickness less than 0.25 inches, with no bumps or lumps. Fail this and USPS reclassifies it as a package, which means it either comes back to you or gets delivered with postage due.

That last one is where most sellers get burned, so it gets its own section.

Stamped PWE

A plain envelope with ordinary postage. Usually no tracking.

Tracked package

Use suitable package shipping when the order is too thick, rigid, valuable or otherwise ineligible for envelope service.

The 0.25 Inch Rule: How Many Cards Fit

USPS sorting centers run envelopes through machinery with rollers, so the envelope has to be flexible enough to bend around them. Everything about ESE flows from that one fact.

This is why a bubble mailer never works, no matter how thin it looks. It’s why two pieces of rigid cardboard around a card gets your envelope pulled at the counter. And it’s why the instinct that makes you a careful seller, protect the card as much as possible, is actively working against you here.

The finished envelope must remain suitable for letter-mail processing. Protection applies only to eligible shipments under the plan’s terms; a holder alone does not establish compliance.

Practical thickness numbers we’ve measured:

  • One card in a penny sleeve inside a Card Saver: roughly 0.06″
  • Three cards in penny sleeves inside one Card Saver: roughly 0.09″
  • Ten modern cards stacked: roughly 0.12″
  • Twenty-five modern cards stacked: roughly 0.30″

We like #10 envelopes because there is room to spread the cards out. The finished pack matters more than the raw card count: holders, sleeves and card stock all change its weight, thickness and flexibility.

Do not treat a fixed card count as a guarantee. Measure and weigh the packed envelope, check the value limits, and use package shipping if it does not comply.

How many cards actually fit in one ESE

eBay Standard Envelope Value Limits: $20 per Card, $50 per Order

The maximum protected value for a single raw card is $20. For a combined order it’s $50.

This gets misunderstood constantly. The caps aren’t a suggestion about what’s sensible to ship in an envelope. They’re the limit of eBay’s shipping protection, and eBay’s eligibility rules follow the same lines: each card has to sell for $20 or less to ship ESE at all, and a multi-card order is protected up to $50. Three $12 cards in one envelope is a $36 order, covered in full. A single $35 card doesn’t qualify, so it goes Ground Advantage.

The interesting question is what to do with the cards that are comping out at just over $20.00.

Compare payout before choosing a price and service

Here’s the pricing trick that took us too long to figure out.

If you have a card that comps around $22 and you offer free shipping, compare the net payout at $19.99 with ESE against $22 with package shipping. The lower sale price can leave you more after postage.

Run it:

$22.00, free shipping, Ground Advantage Final value fees at 13.25%: $2.92 Per-order fee: $0.40 Label: $5.40 at best, more to a rural ZIP Net before tax-related fees, card cost and supplies: $13.28

$19.99, free shipping, ESE Final value fees at 13.25%: $2.65 Per-order fee: $0.40 Label: $0.82 Net before tax-related fees, card cost and supplies: $16.12

In this illustration, giving up $2.01 in sale price leaves almost $3 more after the assumed fees and postage. Actual label prices, buyer tax and seller fee rates vary; use the fee calculator with your own numbers.

The whole swing comes from the label. Ground Advantage costs roughly six times what ESE costs, and on a $20 card that spread is bigger than the price difference you’re conceding.

Treat this as an example to calculate with your own costs. Check current sold values, fees and shipping prices before changing the sale price.

One thing to watch: the card still has to physically comply. A thick 100pt card priced at $19.99 is going ESE only if it clears a quarter inch.

Does eBay Standard Envelope Have Tracking?

ESE includes integrated tracking that gets uploaded to the printed label automatically. eBay describes it as “limited” tracking, and limited is doing real work in that sentence.

Tracking is limited, and an acceptance scan is not required. Do not promise the buyer a scan at every stage or the same tracking detail as a Ground Advantage package.

This is normal. It is also the single biggest source of buyer messages you’ll field as an ESE seller. Most of them arrive on day six and say some version of “tracking hasn’t moved, did you actually ship this.”

Reply promptly and check the order’s delivery estimate. Follow any open buyer-case deadlines; the waiting period for your shipping protection claim does not extend the time to resolve the buyer’s issue.

Lost or Damaged Envelopes: How eBay Shipping Protection Works

ESE includes shipping protection up to $20 on a single order and $50 on a combined order. Filing is straightforward. Handling the buyer correctly is the part that matters more. You can quickly file an ESE claim here for loss OR damage. Our step-by-step guide on how to file an eBay Standard Envelope claim covers the form, the 30 and 90 day rules, and exactly what to upload.

Here’s a real one. A buyer messaged us that the envelope arrived destroyed. He believed it, we believed him, and he hadn’t opened a case.

Respond to the buyer promptly and resolve the order through eBay’s available tools. If a case is open, meet its deadlines. Save the evidence needed for a shipping-protection claim; do not ask the buyer to give up their options for reporting an issue.

What we did:

  1. Messaged him back, apologized, said we’d refund in full.
  2. Asked for photos of the destroyed envelope showing the address label and any postal damage markings, plus photos of the card. Framed as helpful, but we genuinely needed them for the claim.
  3. Told him to hold onto the envelope and card until the claim was confirmed, in case the carrier wanted to inspect.
  4. Refunded through the order using Send Refund, not through a case.
  5. Filed the ESE claim with the photos and the tracking number.

A voluntary refund and a shipping-protection claim are separate actions. Check the current eBay rules for how the particular issue affects seller metrics; do not assume every refund avoids a defect.

The one time we’d flip this is a higher-value card where the damage story doesn’t add up. Then request the return before refunding.

eBay Standard Envelope vs Ground Advantage: When to Switch

Two numbers decide this, and card value is only one of them.

Thickness decides it first. Over 0.25″, the decision is made for you.

Value decides it second. Over $20 you’re outside the protection cap, and as covered above, the smart move in the low $20s is often to price under the cap rather than upgrade the label.

One thing worth saying plainly: never walk these to the counter without a prepaid label. Retail rates run 40 to 50 percent above commercial. Buy through eBay labels or Pirate Ship, both of which pass through the same discounted commercial pricing.

Two Things That Save Real Money

Put the label over the flap. This goes against everything you were taught about addressing envelopes. Put the thermal label on the same side as the opening, covering the flap. The label adhesive becomes a second seal, which matters when the envelope is getting worked by rollers. If you’re printing on paper instead of thermal, tape the label over the flap instead. Keep the barcode and address fully visible either way.

Chase multi-card orders, not cheaper labels. Three separate $2 sales cost you three labels and three $0.30 per-order fees. One three-card order costs you one label and one fee. For three orders using the $0.82 label and $0.30 fixed fee, combining them into one eligible order saves $2.24 in labels and fixed fees plus the packing time, and it’s a bigger lever than anything you’ll squeeze out of the rate table.

The ways to actually get those orders: combine eligible purchases into one shipment, follow our guide to selling bulk card lots or our You-Pick listing guide, and use store promotions like Buy 2 Get 1 that push order size up. To build those listings from scans, explore our bulk card lot tools. For buyer-selected cards, see our You-Pick listing software.

For lots, the photo matters almost as much as the shipping math: clean bulk card lot images make multi-card listings easier to scan before buyers compare price and postage.

FAQ

What size envelope do I need for eBay Standard Envelope?

Anything from 3.5″ x 5″ up to 6.125″ x 11.5″. A #10 business envelope fits and costs about $0.04 when you buy in bulk. Greeting card envelopes work too.

Where do I get eBay Standard Envelopes?

There is no special envelope to buy. eBay Standard Envelope is a label service: you buy the label through eBay and put it on any plain envelope that meets the size, weight, and thickness rules.

Does eBay Standard Envelope have insurance?

It is a shipping protection plan, not an insurance policy. Coverage limits do not make an otherwise ineligible item eligible; see the value rules above and the claims guide.

How much does eBay Standard Envelope cost?

$0.82 for 1 oz, $1.11 for 2 oz, and $1.40 for 3 oz, as checked September 30, 2026. 3 oz is the maximum weight.

What happens if my envelope is thicker than 0.25 inches?

USPS reclassifies it as a package, so it either comes back to you or gets delivered with postage due.

How many cards can I ship in one eBay Standard Envelope?

eBay lists a maximum of 24 raw cards per envelope. This is an upper limit, not a guarantee that your pack qualifies. Holders, thickness, weight, flexibility and value limits still apply.

Before your next listing

ESE is the reason a low-end card business is viable at all. Without it, every $2 and $3 card in your inventory is too expensive to ship.

Check the current service eligibility, measure and weigh the sealed envelope, and price using actual shipping costs. Use package shipping whenever the order does not qualify.

ESE shipping works, we’ve done it thousands of times, and will continue to do so again tomorrow.
